What are the disadvantages of Social Media?

There was a time when we used to have the phone numbers of our family and friends memorized. Those were the days when our memory and concentration were at their peak. Nevertheless, these days we are distracted by the vices created by technology. Information is available at our fingertips, yet we delve into futile arguments on social media in pursuit of the meaningless.

We have lost the ability to think, write and read and No, we are not living in apocalyptic times where civilization has collapsed and we have lost our books, our pen or our thoughts. It’s just that, we are distracted by the overwhelming amount of data thrown at us day after day.

Are we doomed by our technology? Is there any solution to this information overload?

We all are dependent on social media to the extent that quitting it would be counterproductive. We can’t fully avoid social media but we must try to put some limits on it. We have become a slave to social media. As we hear the notification sound on our mobile, we pick up our phone, like a slave, and curiously search it for the next command issued by the master. We have let social media take control of our time and attention.

How can we escape from the valley of despair?

“I am so busy. I don’t have time for anything”, this is a response we constantly hear from people. No wonder people have any time-they are wasting it away browsing through posts and videos on social media. The time you are wasting away in the virtual world, you could use to finish your Job or spend time with your family and friends. Getting your priorities straight is a vital prerequisite for achieving success in life. Set aside time for using social media and strictly stick to it. The world won’t collapse if you don’t look into your phone every ten minutes.

“Social media not only snatches your time, but it also teaches you attention deficiency.”― Neeraj Agnihotri
